First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2017 scoops Platinum at the Decanter World Wine Awards
The results of the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2018 were announced and the Strandveld Vineyards team is very proud to announce that the much loved First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2017 was awarded a Platinum medal and scored 97 points.
Now in its 15th year, the Decanter World Wine Awards is the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. Judged by top wine experts from around the globe, the DWWA is trusted internationally for its rigorous judging process. This year just under 17 000 entries were received. Only 149 Platinum medals were awarded of which 5 went to South African wines.
To receive a Platinum medal, an entry firstly needs to receive a Gold Medal. All Gold Medal winners are then retasted and the top wine in each category is awarded a Platinum Medal. It is an incredible honour for the First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc 2017 to be amongst this esteemed global selection.
This popular Sauvignon Blanc from the Elim wine ward was the first wine produced from vineyards at Africa’s southernmost winery. It is an excellent expression of the cool climate, maritime influence and extreme terroir at the continent’s southern tip and an enticing combination of flavours created from the four distinctive gravel soil types at Strandveld Vineyards. In the cellar, after a long cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks the various components were aged on yeast lees for 6 months before blending, and the 2017 vintage included a touch of Semillon for additional complexity and mouthfeel.
Winemaker, Conrad Vlok, who is ecstatic about this fantastic accolade says, “Now at one year after harvest this wine is really starting to open up and fully reflect the terroir and it will get even better over the next 12 to 18 months. You can now start picking up the typical fresh sea breeze salinity and the complexity of the fruit flavours.”
Strandveld Vineyards is situated in the Elim wine ward which is characterized by cool maritime conditions and unique soil types, and is Africa’s southernmost winery and vineyards. Their two wine ranges, the terroir-specific Strandveld Vineyards range and the popular First Sighting range are renowned for cool climate elegance and finesse. The winery is home to a rustic yet comfortable tasting room and offers accommodation in 2 beautifully restored charming cottages.
