Meet the A-lister Peta Eggierth-Symes

Peta Eggierth-Symes JoziStyle

Peta Eggierth-Symes doesn’t need to be on the A-list, she is the A-list.

No social event is ever complete without Peta who brings a formidable sense of style to every occasion as effortlessly as she mingles between fashionistas and wannabee opinionistas. The former businesswoman is a lethal combination of beauty and brains, but what people love most about her is that Peta has a heart of 24-carat gold and a deliciously dry sense of humour.

What do you love about Jozi?
The fast-paced energy of this city and the warmth and cultural diversity of its people.

What do you do in Jozi?
As little as possible!

After many years of having my own business now officially a ‘lady of leisure. There is so much to do with wonderful art galleries, sophisticated shopping malls and plenty of good restaurants to dine out in.

Are you a morning or evening person?
A morning person and most of the time this early bird catches the worm!

Describe a typical or ideal day in your life?
My typical day starts with my social media. Twitter first, then Instagram. I can assure you it feels like a full-time job. Next, walking my Great Dane come rain or shine. You know what they say ‘mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun”. When I’m good, I am very good and do Pilates and swim. Before this pandemic I would be out lunching, attending art exhibition openings, book launches, and some very glamorous social events.

What makes someone a JoziStyler?
A typical Jozistyler is fierce that their city is the best!

A go-getter with survival energy and attitude, We have so many interesting and high-achieving personalities from all walks of life in this very colourful place. The people make the magic.

How do you spend your weekends in Jozi?
I love “Sloth Sundays” at home with a bottle of good champagne, Netflix, and of course, watching Carte Blanche. No people, no activities!

What’s your favourite season in Jozi?
I love the happiness and freedom of Summer and I never moan about soaring temperatures. Our gorgeous weather is part of the reason I love living in South Africa.

Your number one reason for people to visit Jozi?
So many places of interest is a reason to visit Jozi. For a start people watching and our coffee culture and buzzy restaurants. Sandton City shopping mall with both top local and international brands is a good place to start. Africa Rise in the mall is of great interest especially for tourists as it features top South African designers. There is an abundance of culture and history which you can see in the many galleries and museums. The Nirox Sculpture Park is not to be missed with some fascinating sculptures and installations. If you are a bibliophile The Collectors Treasury with over a million used books is well worth a visit. Book heaven!

Your favourite hotel in Jozi for a #Staycation?
The award-winning Saxon Hotel with superlative service, fine dining, and the wonderful spa. The privacy and attention to detail to service is unmatched. Nothing like starting the day with the butler serving you breakfast in bed. I remember when this was Douw Steyn’s original house before turning it into this legendary boutique hotel.

If I can be naughty and slip this in The Munro Boutique Hotel is a firm favourite. The Grande Dame has great style with a gorgeous pool and the most spectacular views. I could easily move in there!

Your favourite holiday spot outside Jozi?
My home in the Cape. Nothing beats the spectacular sunsets, the stars at night, and the sound of the crashing waves.

Your favourite restaurant in Jozi?
This one is so difficult. I tend to stick to the same restaurants and have at least four firm favourites that I have been frequenting for years. New kid on the block the Asian restaurant TANG with contemporary Japanese cuisine is right at the top of my list. This is really fine dining with an inventive menu, a luxurious experience, with one of the finest wine lists and a very glam champagne Bar. The place to see and be seen. Nicky van der Walt has really excelled with this new venture and if you haven’t been there, get there!

Describe yourself as a cocktail?
Sorry but not a mixed-up cocktail, more like champagne! People say that I have a dry wit, most of the time I am full of bubbles, and as you know, I do like to sparkle!

Favourite spot for sundowners with friends?
I don’t often tend to do sundowners, but when I do, The Four Seasons Westcliff Hotel is the first choice. Especially when the jacarandas are in full bloom. A spectacular and memorable sight.

Describe your ideal date night in Jozi?
Ideal date night is at home with a bottle of good champagne, Netflix, and on Sundays, watching Carte Blanche is a given. I am going to ruin my Social Butterfly reputation with this one!

What do you do to relax in your spare time?
To relax I cuddle up with my Great Dane in bed with a good book. I have just finished BAIT by author Janine Lazarus which is a true crime memoir about the Norwood serial killer and I could not put this down. A riveting read. If I was Janine I would never sleep again. Currently reading The Secret Life of the Savoy and the D’Oyly Carte Family by Olivia Williams which I am really enjoying.

Why don’t you eat in public?
It is a rarity at cocktail parties that one is served bite-sized food. Messy!

But, I could be swayed by a macaroon. Mini hamburgers are messy. Who can cope???

Something we’d never find in your wardrobe?
Shares in Croc’s have been soaring to a record high in 2021, but in my book Crocs just don’t rock.

How to look devastatingly chic… but on a budget?
Wear black and keep it to classical minimal chic with no trend-chasing. Add a dash of drama for the evening and be creative with your accessories. With a bold necklace, scarf or earrings, you can still make a statement and stand out.
