Movie: Carol Leads Spirit Awards Nominations

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara’s romance Carol led the 2016 Spirit Awards nominations with a total of six nominations.

In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price Of Salt, Carol follows the story between two women from very different backgrounds in 1950s New York. An immediate connection sparks between department store clerk Therese [Rooney Mara] and an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage, Carol [Cate Blanchett].

The film, which is slated for release in select cinemas across South Africa on 16th December, was nominated in the following categories:

Best Feature
Best Director
Best Screenplay
Best Female Lead – Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett
Best Cinematography

Room also received 3 nominations in the Best First Screenplay, Best Female Lead for Brie Larson and Best Editing categories. Larson and Jacob Tremblay give towering performances in this beautiful and moving ode to the bond between a mother and her child under the most harrowing of circumstances.

Based on Emma Donoghue’s bestselling book of the same name, Room is scheduled to release South African cinemas on 26th February 2016.

The winners of the Spirit Awards will be announced on February 27th 2016, the day before the Academy Awards ©
