Brands and bloggers are always trying to find ways to collaborate.
Usually, that collaboration is based “exposure”!
The brand gets the exposure while the blogger gets to do all the work in exchange for free samples and the possibility of an invitation to an event. It’s not a Win-Win situation for the blogger. Exposure doesn’t pay the bills, feed the cat, nor does it ever lead to paid-for collaborations.
I don’t blame anyone for accepting freebies or doing product exchanges – we all have to start somewhere, and sometimes the recognition and swag are pretty cool. But, I do think it is time that brands recognise the financial value that they receive from bloggers – and also that bloggers attach a value to their services.
It takes considerable time to craft a well-written blog post, optimise it for search engines, share it across social media platforms, engage with followers, and still find the time to consolidate all that information into a detailed report that includes how many people engaged with their content. The time involved has a financial value, the intellectual property has a financial value, and the brand association has a financial value.
Some bloggers undersell by charging a token amount for their work, or rave about freebies that have no value, or blithely accept whatever offer is going regardless if it is aligned with their brand. I always say that you get what you pay for.
I never post anything a brand gives me unless it interests me personally or I think it will appeal to my followers. I also post at my discretion and reserve the right to express my opinion. I also reserve the right to tell a brand why their proposal may not be a natural fit for me – but that doesn’t mean that we can’t collaborate organically in a way that is mutually beneficial or agree to keep the communication open for future opportunities.
Now, that’s a Win-Win-Win situation.
People often ask for my rates, and there they are:
Social Media Posts: R2,000
Added-Value: I share these on three of my social media platforms because it doesn’t require additional work to share them further.
Blog Posts: R1,500 – R3,000
I average 500 – 1,000 words per posts so it works out to R3 per word. A 1,000-word blog post can take me 4 hours to write but it also includes SEO enhanced copywriting using popular keywords, hyperlinks to your site, and I automatically share them across the social media. Images are also optimised for search engines so they appear in Google search results. I also include a banner that appears on all my pages (worth R1,000 / month)
Competitions require some editorial work but the administration is time-consuming. I don’t charge for running a competition if it’s associated with a paid for blog post.
Ideally, I like to create a package that suits a brand’s budget and requirements to give them optimum value. I also prefer to work on a retainer for three months or more creating organic content.
