It has been a week of events and non-events for me at JoziStyle.
Here are some of the highlights for our readers, listeners and also ourselves, so if you don’t have time to read JoziSyle.joburg from beginning to end, this summary will help you keep abreast of what is trending on JoziStyle.
The Ultimate Braai Master (Johannesburg) auditions were a treat for me as I never had to do anything except eat, eat and eat. There were so many great contenders that I’m relieved that I wasn’t judging. The food was as varied as it had flair, and everyone representing Jozi at the auditions did Jozi proud. Plus, Justin Bonello gave me a personal recce of which contenders impressed him the most. Read: A feast for the eyes & taste-buds @UltimateBraai Master #JoziStyle #Photographs.
The highlight of my week was originally South African Fashion Week but my tickets never materialized. It was disappointing to say the least, because I firmly believe in supporting the local fashion industry, and I love fashion, but I discovered too late that media tickets were meant to be collected at the door. Well, I also discovered that I’m not psychic, so if PR agencies could polish their email etiquette then the world would be a better place for journalists. Well, at least for be, but maybe next year…
I did enjoy a rather massive luxury overdose on The Blue Train with celebrity chef, Jonathan Phang, who was in Jozi to promote his upcoming television show on the Travel Channel Jonathan Phang’s Gourmet Trains 2. It was five-star dining on wheels while Jonathan regaled us with his quick wit and discering palate. I took my cohost, Kate Goetz, along for the ride, and needless to say we both downed more than our fair share of champagne. Kate was slightly annoyed that I was late, and even more so when the organizers made everyone wait until I arrived. I was secretly relieved but lets just say that I know how to make an entrance. Dr. John Demartini hit all the right notes with my listeners on JoziStyle on Radio Today Johannesburg. Listeners called to request that we feature him again, for longer, and wanted more information about him as a person. We will definately do so. Our blog interview with him had over 170 hits within 24 hours, and has become one of our most popular posts this year. Easter is looming large so I’ve shortlisted some of my favourite destinations for a five-star dining experience.
Clico Boutique Hotel is offering an Easter-themed three-course menu comprising canapés on arrival, starters and mains, including slow-roasted lamb with cinnamon, fennel and citrus, plus dessert options– chocolate choices in abundance.
Tau Game Lodge in the Madikwe Reserve, bordering Botswana, offers an ideal 5-star safari getaway for Easter, complete with the revitalizing Tau Spa Oasis to complement the prolific game viewing from room and lodge decks overlooking the large waterhole. My ideal luxe-experience getaway!
Guests at Valley Lodge & Spa in Magaliesburg will be thrilled with the delectable packages on offer for Easter– relaxing Sunday lunches, private picnics catered for by the chef and her creative team on the banks of the Magalies River flowing through the privately appointed destination.

De Hoek Country Hotel chef and co-owner, Michael Holenstein, makes every meal an occasion and Easter is no exception. Diners have a selection of cources to choose from but I’m leaning towards the Seared scallop, grilled calamari, black pudding (questionable), bacon chip, sweet corn sauce for starters, followed by roast beef fillet, truffle puff pastry crust, spinach, mushrooms, roasted vegetables, pinotage sauce. I’ll decide on one of the four dessert options after I’ve conclude the preceding cources.

Despite the best of intentions to eliminate sugar, carbs and alcohol from my diet, it would have been a mortal sin not to have appreciated the generous gifts from Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards. Their award winning Shiraz is opulent with ripe fruit and soft tannins, the Chenin Blanc blend is perfumed with peach, citrus and melon notes, while the Family Reserve Red Blend rewards the palate with nuances of berries and black pepper. The kitchen looked like a bomb hit it but it was well worth it. Read both our reviews about Leeuwenkuil‘s wines.
If you’re a true #JoziStyler then you know it is not cool to drink and drive. Even if it is against the law, I can think of nothing worse than living with the consequences of being in an accident that could end someone’s life or leave them maimed- or even yourself. Fortunately, there is always Uber who offer a great service collecting you from your favourite restaurant and taking you home. It’s affordable and convenient. JoziStyle have teamed with Uber to give you R150 off your first ride with them using this code: https://www.uber.com/invite/uberjozistyle. Please consider using Uber before you get in the position where you have been drinking and need a ride home. If not just for your own personal safety, but also the consideration of others.
Finally, I have one favour to ask all #JoziStylers and steak lovers. South Africa is voting for their best steakhouse in the country, so I encourage everyone to vote for their favourite steakhouse, especially all Joburgers to vote for their favourite steakhouse in Johannesburg, because we need to support the local restaurants who are offering a service that is a cut above the best. The Local Grill in Parktown North won the innaugral award in 2013, and in 2014, so I’m cheering them on to win Triple Crown of Steakhouse Championships. You can vote for whoever you like, just vote!
