This Father’s Day, Sunday 21st June, Groote Post is paying special tribute to their very own ‘Old Man’, Peter Pentz, by showcasing The Old Man’s Blend range of wines, released in his honour, with Happy Father’s Day neck-tags. As from about mid-May until Father’s Day, The Old Man’s Blend White (750ml) and The Old Man’s Blend Red (750ml and Magnum), with Father’s Day neck-tags will be available for purchase: from select retailers, Makro, at the Groote Post farm and for online purchasing via the Groote Post website.
Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend range comprises seriously good wines at seriously good prices. With their stylish eye-catching packaging and Happy Father’s Day neck-tags for personalised messaging, these wines will make for super Father’s Day gifts.
The Old Man’s Blend range came into being in 2001 at the behest of ‘The Old Man’, Peter Pentz, who asked the family to blend him a red wine to enjoy as his winter evening tipple. The enormous popularity of The Old Man’s Blend Red established a Groote Post tradition, with The Old Man’s Blend White subsequently added to the range.
Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend White 2014 is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (60%), Chenin Blanc (30%) and Semillon (10%). This Sauvignon Blanc based summer wine is fresh and zesty and brimming with citrus and grapefruit. The Chenin Blanc and Semillon components lend intensity and depth to the wine. The three varietals that make up the blend are kept separate throughout the winemaking process and then blended in different ratios until the final blend meets The Old Man’s approval. Winemaker, Lukas Wentzel, proudly states that “this wine is sure to be a terrific value-for-money crowd pleaser” – and at a retail price of around R64, this is a bargain which is hard to beat!
Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend Red 2014, which retails at approximately R68, is a blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Shiraz (20%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). It is an easy-drinking soft and smooth blended red wine. White pepper, spice and raspberry are prominent on the nose with soft and ripe tannins giving an elegant finish. During the winemaking and 10 months wood maturation, the cultivars are kept apart, and The Old Man, Peter Pentz, takes part in rigorous tasting sessions to decide on the final blend.
The Groote Post Old Man’s Blend Red 2013 Magnum will also be sporting a Happy Father’s Day neck-tag and will be retailing for around R148.
Peter Pentz, The Old Man At Groote Post
Colloquially known as the ‘Old Man’, Peter Pentz is a celebrated character. In addition to producing award-winning wines at Groote Post since 1999, Peter was one of South Africa’s top dairy pioneers, with more than 40 years’ farming experience and a number of prestigious local and international awards to his name, a forerunner and award-winner in ecologically sensitive farming and environmental conservation, and he is a highly respected property developer. Peter is also a father of three and a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren.
In addition to numerous awards for Groote Post wines since their launch in 1999, Peter Pentz was also the recipient of many other prominent awards, including:
· State’s Premier Soil Conservation Award in 1996;
· South African Agricultural Writers’ National Farmer of the Year Award in 1998;
· Dairymail Dairy Newsmaker of the Year in 2001;
· World Dairy Expo’s International Person of the Year in 2001 – The World Dairy Expo certificate was signed by President George W Bush and carried the citation: “Peter Pentz is an influential and respected dairyman who pioneered the introduction of imported bull semen and US genetics into South Africa. An international ambassador for superior dairy genetics; A visionary whose leadership has impacted many in the dairy industry; Progressive, committed and successful.”

Only an hour’s drive from Cape Town, the historic Groote Post farm presents a rustic and rural atmosphere with undulating hills, vast open spaces and warm country hospitality. In addition to a wide range of award-winning wines, Hilda’s Kitchen’s superb culinary experience and Farm Drives through the private game camp and vineyards, Groote Post also offers:

Groote Post is one of the few wine cellars, let alone wineries with restaurants, open on Sundays in the Darling district and surrounding wine routes.
