Fleur du Cap’s new Sauvignon Blanc 2015 vintage, just released in the ultra-elegant Unfiltered range, is a wonderfully complex wine with ample personality and an unfettered expression of its Darling roots.
The Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc 2015 is a multi-layered wine with complex varietal flavours from dryland vineyards in Darling, highly regarded as one of South Africa’s most sought-after regions for Sauvignon Blanc.
“Brilliantly clear and crisp, abounding with aromas of cucumber, fresh young asparagus tips, grapefruit, jasmine, passion fruit and lemon,” is how winemaker Kristin Basson describes the wine.
The grapes were harvested from a select parcel of dryland vineyards overlooking the Atlantic Ocean where cool sea breezes provide enough moisture to sustain beautiful fruit bursting with complex flavours. The deep red oakleaf soil with its high clay content in which the vineyards are grown, has exceptional water nutrient holding capacity that buffers against drought without the need for supplementary irrigation. The result is low yielding vineyards with grapes of exceptional flavour concentration.
The exquisite fresh notes that reveal themselves in this top tier Sauvignon Blanc are jewels from their Darling origin that linger long on the palate. This is a wonderfully smooth wine that melds beautifully with green curries, salads with asparagus and green figs as well as rich cheese soufflés.
“The zippy acidity is the perfect complement to seafood, especially oysters,” recommends Basson, who is responsible for Fleur du Cap’s white wines at Die Bergkelder in Stellenbosch.
