From humble Boer origins to becoming the most famous white woman in South Africa, Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout is a legend in her own right. She’s was star of the silver screen in such Afrikaner film classics as Boggel en die Akkedis, Meisie van my Drome, and Duiwelsvallei, married into the political Bezuidenhout dynasty and became South Africa’s ambassador to Bapetikosweti. She eventially joined the ANC, created her own Youtube channel and even wrote two cook books two cookbooks: Evita’s Kossie Sikelela and Evita’s Bossie Sikelela.

Q. What is your earliest memory of food?
A: Eating something sweet which I think was a precious chocolate being kept for someone else.
Q. How would you describe your style of cooking? What inspires you?
A: Traditional Afro-European
Q: Describe a typical day in your kitchen?
A: Disciplined, planned and tidy – until the cooking starts. Major focus on sturdy breakfast, sensible lunch and light supper. Fridge out of bounds for snacks. Good lighting and fresh air. Pets fed in their own space.
Q: What have been your proudest moments as a hostess?
A: Being asked by President Nelson Mandela to take over his kitchen and cook for him and the world.
Never take for granted that yesterday’s success will be today’s triumph.

Q. What are your favourite ingredients? And, 1 ingredient that we will never find in your kitchen?
A: Eggs – because they can become anything. And sago always reminds me of froggy eyes!
Q. What is your favourite dish that you enjoy cooking?
A: It has to be bobotie because I have made it so famous.
Q: Six people (dead or alive) who you would like to cook for?
A: Maria van Riebeeck, Margaret Thatcher, Melania Trump, Julius Malema, Kim Jong Un.
Q. What challenges are you facing in 2017?
A: Turning open a tap and finding fresh clean water.
Q. The #1 thing that annoys you in restaurants?
A: Loud pointless music.
Q. Any final thoughts you’d like to share?
A: If food is the music of life, cook on!
