A short seven years after the launch of their pioneering cognac D’Usse VSOP, the cognac brand introduces its follow-up formulation, D’USSE XO (Extra Old) to South African audiences. An exceptionally premium offering, D’USSE XO is a work of exquisite craftmanship by renowned Cellar Master Michel Casavecchia, who personally selected the eaux de vie from the cellars of the famed Chateau de Cognac to create the new blend.
D’USSE Cognac is a byproduct of a partnership between superstar rapper Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter and Bacardi Limited. On the occasion of World Cognac Day, June 4, Casavecchia will be in South Africa, at the invitation of D’USSE holding company Bacardi South Africa. His task – to formally introduce D’USSE XO to local audiences.
Michel Casavecchia | Cellar Master
It was a distinct privilege to craft an addition to the cognac category – with D’USSE, the challenge placed to me was to innovate, and not merely replicate what Cellar Masters centuries before me have created. This allowed me the freedom to experiment and explore – as a result, D’USSE XO was carefully crafted from more than 100 eaux de vie varietals, and the outcome, a blend that the discerning cognac connoisseur is sure to savour.
Accompanying Casavecchia is D’USSE’s first Global Ambassador, Sullivan Doh, an accomplished Mixologist whose passion for French spirits has earned him industry Rockstar status. In 2014, he established his legendary bar, Le Syndicat: Organisation de Défense des Spiritueux Français, (The Union: Organization in Defense of French Spirits), the venue name a tongue-in-cheek celebration of French spirits and liquers. It is precisely this fascination with the category that made him the obvious choice to represent brand D’USSE to a global audience.
“The beauty of D’USSE also lies in its seeming contradictions” explains Doh “It is classical and traditional, yet contemporary and playful. As a cognac, it finds expression in a variety of styles – it can be taken neat – the old-school way, but also elegantly lends itself to being served as a cocktail. I’m certainly excited to demonstrate D’USSE XO’s versatility to South Africa, and am sure that audiences will love the evolution of brand D’USSE!’
Eaux de vie – directly translated means waters of life. The term refers to the raw material used to make cognac – a category of brandy made from distilled fruits, (other than grapes) Apricot, cherry, peach, raspberry, plum, pear and apple are amongst the fruits used to create eaux de vie.
D’USSE XO’s arrival in South Africa will take place in trademark D’USSE style – a range of experiences to showcase the brand’s versatility. The celebrations will kick off with a Master Class to Bacardi’s trade and distributor partners with Michel Casavecchia on World Cognac Day, where the fascinating history and inspiration behind cognac will be explored. The Welcome Home dinner is planned as the ultimate food and cognac cocktail pairing experience, demonstrating how a fine dining experience can be enhanced with creatively crafted D’USSE cocktails, courtesy of Sullivan Doh. As a nod to its urban roots, D’USSE will also host an exclusive party, where the country’s A-Listers and game-changers will experience the international jet-set’s cognac of choice.
D’USSE XO comes in an enigmatic black bottle emblazoned with the distinguished emblem, of the Croix de Lorraine (Cross of Lorraine), a historical French symbol associated with perseverance, courage and integrity – attributes that D’USSE exemplifies as a bold premium cognac brand that in a mere 7 years of existence, has made an indelible mark on the world stage.
D’USSE is available across most reputable liquor and bottle stores in South Africa and premium bars and restaurants. As an ultra-premium cognac, D’USSE XO is available on a limited-edition basis.
