Never-seen-before gardens to be opened in aid of charity

The gardens at Mulligatawny Farm, the weekend retreat of interior designer Michael Hogan, situated in Skeerpoort near the Cradle of Humankind, will be open to the public on the 1st and 2nd of October 2016, for the first and only time, in aid of St George’s Turning Point Foundation.

This spectacular 16-hectare garden, although only just over a decade in the making, has been lovingly designed and conceptualised by Michael, drawing inspiration from European landscapes and Monet’s water gardens at Giverney.

The garden exudes whimsy and romance, and the highlights include over 130 varieties of waterlilies, thousands of roses, irises, crab apples and a large collection of bamboo varities. There is an orchard of heritage fruit trees, a potager with hand-painted tiles depicting exotic birds, a folly and a grotto. A newly created Garden Cathedral is sure to be a major attraction. Other highlights include sculptures, murals and benches throughout the garden and exceptional bird life at every turn.

The farm is approximately 70 kilometres from Johannesburg, and ample parking is available along the farm road, with a 500 metre walk to the gardens themselves—this is an outing only for those who are moderately fit. Car guards will be provided.

Fournos Bakery will be on hand to provide food, coffee and soft drinks, and there will be a farm stall laden with delicious treats. Why not make a day of it and book lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area?

All proceeds will go to the Turning Point Foundation, which was established to assist young people who have been brought up in registered children’s homes to make the transition to independent living, and ultimately to becoming contributing members of society.
