One of my foodie highlights in 2016 was at Summer Place – I was invited as a media guest by FAIRLADY magazine to their FAIRLADY Woman of the Future Awards (2016).
Summer Place is a a gorgeous banqueting destination in Hyde Park, Sandton, complete with manicured lawns, impressive water features, and divine dining. It is equally perfect for corporate events and private parties. While they do have a first class banqueting team, you are allowed to use your own caterer (or one of their pre-approved 3rd party caterers), because any experience at Summer Place remains a ‘Summer Place’ experience.
Our starter was a bruschetta topped with a Ceasar salad served with grilled asparagus and a creamy Ceasar salad dressing, and a floral garnish for colour. It was a refreshing light introduction to menu filled with crunch and zest. Fortunately, one of our guests was late so I appropriated her starter without shame.
The main dish: marinated fillet medallions was served with an assortment of vegetables – something we see too little of nowadays, and a red wine juice. The fillet was generous and succulent. I was especially impressed that a banqueting destination could produce such a technically perfect and flavoursome dish for a large room of people. Service was prompt too as everybody was served within minutes of each other. I can’t recall the total number of guests, but each table seated 10 people, and there must have been 20 tables.
I’m not a fan of poached fruit gelatinous desserts so the poached pear in red wine with a vanilla panna cotta was wasted on me, but the remainder of the table enjoyed them. Our erstwhile missing guest called and cancelled, so someone promptly grabbed her dessert. Double win for them!
Summer Place sets a standard that is unmistakably their own, from entrance to exit, and everywhere in between. Highly recommended for your functions – and definitely if you’re invited as a guest!
