Reception Kitchen and Bar in Kensington have a history as colourful as their restaurant and bar.
In their own words they say:
Our journey from Cape Town to Kensington
Step one… Life change. After completing a sold-out season at Emperor’s Palace with The Story of the Moon our hearts were set on giving Johannesburg a go, and committing to making the City of Gold our home. It was the diversity of Jozi that first hooked us – the warmth of the pan-African community and the beating heart of the city that most excited us, with a tangible sense of endless opportunity and a truly unique creativity to inspire.
Step two… Focus. After making the decision to focus on a city-specific project and taking a well-deserved break from creating shows, the search began to find a restaurant space to bring a touch of what we had been doing in other parts of the country for many years. A tsunami of temptation came in from all over town, with compelling offers from creative urban-space experts Josef Talotta (who’s been cleverly reconceptualising Braamfontein) and Shruthi Nair (with her infectious dedication to people and one of the driving creative forces behind the rise of Maboneng). While all offered interesting solutions that ticked our boxes on many levels, nothing felt 100% right.
Step three… Inspiration. And then, sitting late one night at Love Revo, a Congolese friend, Etienne Ephys, said, “Please come and look at Queen Street, Kensington”. After taking a quick look, it was definitely not love at first sight but we quickly began to experience the warmth of this hard-working ‘street family’ community. Slowly but surely all the pieces started to fall in place. Instinct über alles!
Step four… Fate. A property popped onto the market, just like that. We took a look and signed the paperwork the next day. 141 Queen Street was set to become our new home. And so the work began, converting a beautiful space that had fallen on hard times into a neighbourhood destination, one that totally embraces and celebrates this city’s greatest asset: diversity.
Step five… You. And so our journey continues. As we put down roots in Queen Street, watering our project with love, passion and creativity and joining hands with the community of our beloved Jozi, we invite you to join us. A warm reception awaits.
