Introducing the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair – a new era for Joburg’s favourite Fair. Just like our exhibitors spend years perfecting their trade, crafting their products and adapting their wares to meet the changing demands of the market, so we keep our ear to the ground and craft our event to make sure it remains the unique and much-loved Fair Joburgers have come to expect.
Over the last four years we have been awed by the workmanship and effort that goes into every item exhibited and sold at the Fair. We have realised that this Fair is not just about food, wine and design. It’s about so much more than that. It’s about hundreds of stories behind thousands of products that have been painstakingly conceived and created by talented individuals from around the country.
When you bite into a wild boar sausage at the Fair, there’s a story behind that sausage – and a pair of hands that worked to create the perfect combination of flavour, appearance and sustainability. When you buy a lamp at the Fair, there’s a person behind that lamp, who spent hours fine-tuning the design and carving those intricate details by hand. And that wine or you’re drinking? It was made by a master vigneron with years of experience and a personal approach to blending, fermenting and storing.
And this is why the Fair has been renamed the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair. We want to celebrate these stories and the people behind them, and acknowledge that there is a fast-growing return to the artisanal, and a trend towards knowing where everything you buy comes from and how it was produced.
It’s about bringing you well-made, ethically produced, desirable products, with a story behind them and a trace of the hand defining them.
We hope you’ll be joining us this year, from 7-9 November on the rooftop of Hyde Park Corner to meet the producers, sample and enjoy their products, and be inspired by the talent on offer from these creative individuals.
