Food Network Turns Up The Heat On Local Cuisine With Two Exciting New Shows!
Join Chef Katlego Mlambo and Chef Nti as they introduce South Africans to the best of what local cuisine has to offer.
Food Network is proving that local is indeed lekker with the upcoming premiere of two exciting new South African cooking shows starring home-grown talents Chef Katlego Mlambo and Chef Nti.
This showcase of culinary excellence kicks off with the premier ‘Inside Job with chef Katlego Mlambo’ on 13 March, followed by ‘Street Food in Africa with Chef Nti’ on 17 March.
“Nothing quite hits the spot like local cuisine and the same can be said for local talent and entertainment,” says Henry Windridge, Senior Director: Marketing, Digital and Creative at Discovery Inc. “Food has always brought people together – especially during 2020 with extended lockdowns, social distancing and the inability to break bread with those closest to us. Food is how South Africans come together. The personalities and themes of our two new shows are geared to do just that!”
Katlego Sebastian Mlambo was born and raised in the township of Eldorado Park in the south of Johannesburg. Spending most of his time in the kitchen with his grandmother, Katlego developed a passion for cooking from a young age.
After completing his schooling at King Edward VII high school (KES), Katlego began saving towards his culinary education and chose the Sillwood School of cookery to embark on a three-year Cordon Bleus Grande Diplome – the most comprehensive culinary course available in South Africa. Upon graduation, Katlego made his way through the high-end Cape Town restaurant scene, working at establishments such as La Colombe, The Roundhouse and Rust en Vrede, before travelling to the US to work at The Pitcher Inn in Vermont.
Two years later, homesick Katlego returned to Johannesburg to work as a sous-chef at the prestigious Saxon Hotel Villas and Spa. After the Saxon, Katlego found himself back in Cape Town, this time under the tutelage of Luke Dale Robert as the group’s Executive Sous-Chef.
Although Cape Town was a fantastic experience, Johannesburg was always dear to Katlego’s heart. In March 2019, he joined the Steyn Entertainment group in his first role as Head Chef of The Marabi Jazz Club and The Hallmark House Hotel. In April of 2019, Katlego had the honour of cooking for President Barack Obama at the National Museum of African American History in Washington DC.
In November 2019, Katlego was awarded the Nederburg Rising Star Award at The Eat Out Awards, recognising his distinctive mark on the culinary industry.
Chef Katlego is partnering with The Food Network on a 13-episode cooking show, ‘Inside Job with chef Katlego Mlambo’, where he will tell the story of his love for South African ingredients and fine dining culture while dancing through his exceptional gourmet recipes.
‘Inside Job with Chef Katlego Mlambo’ follows the boisterous chef on his journey to create gourmet food with South African flair and a taste for Africa. Each themed episode showcases his love for local ingredients and fine dining culture, while he dances through to his favourite playlists.
Nthabiseng Nti Ramaboa, famously known as Chef Nti, was born in Tladi, Soweto. She is a multitalented powerhouse who has worked in fashion, facility management, and most recently the food industry.
Chef Nti took a leap of faith when selling her home and cars to fund her studies at the International Hotel School in Sunninghill and has since become a young and dynamic arbiter of South African cuisine.
Now, Chef Nti celebrates South African flavours within her event space in Maboneng in Jo’burg, named The Taste Kitchen. Her personal brand – rooted in her heritage, but global in its approach – is inspired by the authentic South African cooking she grew up with; her dishes a true reflection of her adventurous spirit and love for homegrown flavours.
Having shared stages with Marco Pierre White, Jan Handrick van der Westhuizen, Jenny Morris, and other international culinary luminaries, Chef Nti has also hosted and delivered masterclasses at numerous events including the DSTV Delicious Festival and the Good Food and Wine show.
In partnership with The Food Network, Chef Nti is set to launch a 13-episode cooking show, ‘Street Food in Africa’, taking viewers on a journey around South Africa, from its cities to townships, to find out what defines South African culinary culture. In each episode, Chef Nti will tell authentic South African stories with food as the identity. Chef Nti shares insights and her take on iconic dishes that have been reinterpreted and remixed over the years.
“Sharing a meal has always been deeply rooted alongside sharing stories, cultural experiences and traditions. As the world adapts to new practices and ways of being, the common denominator remains our love for food and experiences with those we care about,” says Windridge. “While much has changed in the world in recent months, the power of food and how we connect over a plate has not. We’re sure viewers will be as captivated by the flair and charisma of both chefs as they welcome them into their homes this March,” he concluded.
‘Inside Job’ premieres on DSTV Channel 175 on 13 March and ‘Street Food in Africa’ the following week on 17 March.
