What do you love about Jozi?
I love the friendly spirited people from all walks of life that are happy to help each other with a smile. I adore the trees that line our streets in abundance(our man-made forest). I love the weather the thunderstorms in Summer and chilly mornings in Winter I love the Hadedas and coffee shops I love the melting pot of culture the zest for life that is truly Jozi. We love Gucci Art and a bit of a brand sometimes yet are so happy to make new friends and actually invite them over to our homes with sincerity and a real sense of generosity.

What do you do in Jozi?
My sister and I run an interior design company David Muirhead & Associates that specializes in hospitality and residential interiors. My love of interiors was born at a very young age and I adore beautiful interiors and sharing my gift and lifelong passion with our clients. We love what we do and have an amazing design team that are like family to us. When we are not working we are often thinking of work or spending quality time with the family. Jozi often never rests but we do try to relax on the weekends.

Are you a morning or evening person?
I adore early mornings. Listening to the birdlife in my garden is a dream especially whilst sipping on a morning Nespresso. Your best thoughts and ideas are clearest in the early morning. I plan the day and often I am most creative early in the morning. I also love the Jozi evenings especially spent in my garden at home. The temperature drops at around six pm and the fragrant smells from the garden become dominant, my garden lights come on and the stage is set for a beautiful evening. I adore music so this also plays a very important role in my life. I always believe that setting a mood is not only about a beautiful interior but space needs to appeal to all the senses to be complete.

Describe a typical or ideal day in your life?
I wake up early most days. I often find the silence of the morning feeds my soul. I’m very optimistic and generally excited about life and tend to think about my day and the projects we are busy with. I phone my parents and family daily to check-in. I go to the design studio and the day begins.

Every day is different and it’s exactly that which I love about our industry.

What makes someone a JoziStyler?
A friendly optimistic person with great attitude that knows what they want and expresses confidence and creativity with a sense of ease.

How do you spend your weekends in Jozi?
That would be telling but often I’m in my garden or out at a restaurant with clients or friends.I adore my family and my nieces and nephew would take preference over everything. They are most important. I also love Art Trees and beautiful homes travel and beautiful gardens and an occasional Netflix movie have been the great saviour of lockdown. I have recently ventured back into the gym and I love going on the weekends.

Shiatsu. I have a treatment regularly and love a Thai massage at the Lavannah spa at Benmore Gardens. I also adore taking my Pug for long walks when I can.

Describe the David Muirhead aesthetic?
I have a great understanding and appreciation for art of all styles and influences. I love Picasso as much as I can appreciate a Philemon or a William Kentridge. The David Muirhead brand focuses on understanding the client’s needs and preferences and interpreting the client and the bespoke expression of their personality or brief. This makes life more interesting and keeps one versatile however in creating the expression and interior it is important to remain honest. As a style guide, we always keep in mind the best solutions and the client’s goals in mind.

What’s never going to happen even if a client insists?
No Art.😂

Can money buy good taste?
No, however, it can often assist in padding the nest and sometimes the nest becomes rather glamorous.

Our homes desperately need a post-COVID makeover – but on a budget. What do you suggest?

  • The most cost-effective refurbishments I have ever done have been with Paint. Paint the walls a colour that you resonate with, use a colour that brings you Joy. Be courageous.

  • I recently walked into a home that was beige and all I could feel from the personality of the client was red and a strong personality that loved creative expression. Be expressive. Life is too short not to express yourself and the beauty of paint is it is so easily changed.

  • Then reinvent repurpose and unclutter. Decide what you need to keep and what makes sense in your space. Give to charity what you do not need.

Describe your dream job if money was no object?
A new hotel project from the foundation and planning upwards.

Thank you David for mentioning 54 on Bath, The Palazzo Hotel and InterContinental OR Tambo, it is interesting to hear your thoughts on many topics. The InterContinental was years ahead of its time and is ranked as one of the best airport hotels in the world year after year, the interior design has not dated and is still relevant 20 years later, now that is timeless!
I met David shortly after that hotel opened and more recently, when he did the refresh of the Medeo Restaurant and Cafe Rialto at The Palazzo which has turned out beautifully. As the hotel was fully booked for the recent long weekend for Heritage Day, many guests had an opportunity to enjoy this magnificent Italian haven, revel in the changes that you made in these spaces.
David also popped into 54 on Bath last week as the hotel reopened on the 22 September to assist with the placement of objet and artwork which is much appreciated.
