Friday 19th May – 19.30
Grangehurst is a red wine cellar established by winemaker Jeremy Walker on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain midway between the False Bay coastline and the town of Stellenbosch. This property has been owned by the Walker family since 1973, but the winemaking business only started in 1992.
After studying winemaking at Stellenbosch University in the 1970’s, Jeremy worked at Bertrams in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch and later helped to establish Clos Malverne (also in Devon Valley). After six vintages at Clos Malverne, Jeremy decided to convert the squash court at Grangehurst into a small winery and purchased grapes from some of his neighbours.
The winery’s focus is on Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Merlot which have been crushed at Grangehurst since 1992. Other varietals – Shiraz and Petit Verdot – are now also produced and used in various blends. A small quantity of dry rosé (the closest that Grangehurst gets to white wine!) also forms part of the current range.
